I am a tech worker in Silicon Valley who happens to be a writer. Since 2008 I have been writing a monthly column in the Irish Herald newspaper in San Francisco. I focus on economics, governance, and comparative public policy.
An archive of my articles is available on my Substack.
In 2014 I published a book called Waiting to Launch, a three-part exploration of the untapped global potential of Gaelic games.
The first part of the book details my own efforts to promote the GAA both inside and outside of Ireland, and the lessons I learned.
The second part examines the history of how sporting codes originated in Ireland and England, how both countries exported their games to the world in the nineteenth century, but only one country succeeded in making its sports the global standard, despite sending emigrants in smaller numbers than the Irish.
The third part makes recommendations for how the GAA can bring the games to their full global potential by thinking bigger.
